A transmission allows power produced by the engine to reach the wheels in a focused way. Without this control, your car’s wheels would never move, regardless of the level of energy supplied by the engine. This fact makes the transmission an essential part of your car. If your transmission is damaged, you’ll need a transmission repair at your friendly car dealer in Staten Island, NY. These are a few signs your transmission could be in trouble.

Damaged Transmission Pan

The transmission pan is located on the underside of your transmission. This pan protects the transmission from damage and stores the approximately 12 quarts of fluid that’s essential for your transmission. Another function of the pan is to cool the transmission fluid as it passes through the pan.

Due to its location, the pan can develop rust over time if it’s not regularly serviced. Rust will slowly eat through the metal, which exposes the transmission to outside contaminants. A hole in the transmission pan will also allow fluid to escape, and your transmission will start to overheat. We’ll examine the pan and replace it with a new one if it’s rusted or otherwise damaged.

Worn Sensors

Since the 1980s, computers and sensors have been an important part of every car. The sensors are attached to various components, and they report on the condition of these components to your computer. The information they provide is used by your computer to make decisions. This continual information flow allows a modern car to work more effectively than ever before.

Your transmission contains sensors that report on various issues, including temperature and the condition of components. Sensors, unfortunately, can fail or get damaged. The load-bearing sensor, for example, detects the load and weight on your car, as excess weight increases stress on the engine. If this sensor fails, transmission components can be damaged by incorrect shift changes. We can test the sensors and easily replace damaged ones for you.

Blocked Transmission Filter

Your transmission has a filter that collects dirt and other debris to remove it from the transmission. The filter is located in the transmission pan on the underside of the transmission. Fluid is pumped through the transmission, and it can accumulate minute metal particles, clutch residue, and other debris as it moves. A magnet in the filter draws the metal pieces out of the fluid as it passes through the filter.

Like any filter, the transmission filter can become blocked in time. If this happens, the flow of transmission fluid will be cut off. You’ll experience rough gear shifting, and your gears might not move at all. We can replace the filter to fix these problems.
