Staten Island, NY, is a borough of New York City known for its sprawling green areas, historical landmarks, and cultural centers. If you are traveling around the region in your 2023 Jeep Wrangler and want to visit some of the best museums near Staten Island, here are three popular spots where you can learn all about its history, traditions, and culture.

1. Staten Island Museum

As the oldest cultural institution in Staten Island, the Staten Island Museum was established in the 1880s and features a large collection of artifacts from different periods in the region’s history. Located at 1000 Richmond Terrace in the northeastern corner of the island, this place is open Fridays through Sundays between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm and is one of the best places to learn about the area before checking out its other famous landmarks.

The history collection of Staten Island Museum features more than half a million items that showcase the most important events that have shaped the borough throughout the years. The art collection, on the other hand, features Renaissance paintings, ancient Egyptian sculptures, as well as works by local contemporary artists. This museum also features a large natural science museum that portrays the biodiversity of the New York Metropolitan Area.

2. National Lighthouse Museum

Located at 200 The Promenade at Lighthouse Point, the National Lighthouse Museum opened its doors to the public in 2015 with the goal of showcasing and honoring the history of lighthouses and their keepers while preserving and interpreting historical objects and artifacts related to these structures. Open to visitors Wednesday through Sunday between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm, this place offers self-guided tours, lectures, and group tours by appointment.

Two of the main permanent exhibits you can check out at the National Lighthouse Museum are “Wall of Lights” and “Lighthouse Timeline”. The former features a collection of over 180 lighthouse models from all over the country, while the latter provides a detailed timeline of the development of lighthouses from the original Pharos Lighthouse in Egypt to the present day.

3. The Noble Maritime Collection

Located within the Snug Harbor complex at 1000 Richmond Terrace #8, the Noble Maritime Collection is a large building that portrays the work of sailor and artist John A. Noble through a series of permanent exhibits and galleries. Open to visitors Thursday through Sunday between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm, this museum and cultural center features a ship model gallery and the restored houseboat studio of John A. Noble.
