You might have heard that the Jeep Grand Cherokee has received a slight makeover from its previous WK2 version. While Jeep has discontinued production of it this year, it’s still possible to find it alongside the new iteration, the Jeep Grand Cherokee WL. We’ll explain what that means and why you have nothing to worry regarding the continued perennial excellence of the Grand Cherokee series.

Jeep Grand Cherokee: WK2 & WL - What’s the Difference?

The WK2 was part of the previous generation of Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. It’s normal for manufacturers to create a specific model, only to update or relaunch it every few years with sometimes vastly improved features. While almost every annual adaptation has something over the previous edition, a whole new generation might bring about especially dramatic changes.

Here’s a timeline of how the Jeep Grand Cherokee has changed over the past 20 years:

  • 1st generation: ZJ  (1993-1998)

  • 2nd generation: WJ (1999-2004)

  • 3rd generation: WK (2005-2010)

  • 4th generation: WK2 (2011-2022)

  • 5th generation: WL (2021-22)

So, you can see from the generational transition that the Grand Cherokee has had a slight overlap between the WK2 and WL installments. What does this mean in terms of changes to Grand Cherokee? We expect to see a few substantial modifications, but you can still purchase new versions of both.

The new WL line is the first Grand Cherokee to feature three-row seating, much to the delight of families who love Jeep SUVs. You won’t be able to order a new WK2 from the manufacturer, but you can inquire with local dealerships about existing models. This includes those with the following trims: Laredo E, Laredo X, and Limited.
