Do you smell something? If you’re lucky, it’s just your lunch. If you smell something burning, it could be your car. A burning smell is just one of the many signs of an engine oil leak. If you aren’t sure what the signs are for an engine oil leak, keep reading for more information. That way, you’ll know whether you have a small problem or a really big problem.?
Reading the Signs
The first sign many people get that there is an oil leak in their engine is puddles under the car. There can be several colors of car puddles, but if you have an oil leak, the puddle will be black, brown or yellow. If you aren’t sure whether the oil leak is yours, you can double-check by placing cardboard or a paper plate underneath your car to check the leak.
Another sign you may have an engine leak is if your car is smoking and you smell burning. This usually occurs when oil is leaking onto the exhaust system. If you smell or see smoke coming from your hood, you need to get your car checked out right away. Otherwise, you could be doing more damage to your engine.
You might also notice that your oil dashboard light is on. This doesn’t always indicate an oil leak, but it does indicate a reduced oil pressure. You need to figure out why your oil light keeps coming on, and get it fixed before it causes you real trouble. You may also want to get your oil checked if your check engine light keeps coming on as well.
