NY Jeep Dealer | Newark Chrysler Finance
Well, you just bought that shiny NY new car. Unless you lease a new car every couple of years, you will probably keep your wheels for several years. What you hope for is good reliability over that time, but we also need to know how a vehicle retains value as it ages. The reality is many people trade-in their vehicles after they have owned them, and recapturing your investment becomes more important.
Kelly Blue Book has been tracking used vehicle residual values since 1981, and they began handing out Best Resale Value awards starting in 2003. They have just issued their list of the ten 2016 models they believe will best retain value over time. Let’s take a look, starting with number 10. Remember, these are all 2016 models being looked at five years from now.
10 — Subaru Forester, retained value over five years: 47.3%
The Forester has a loyal following in wet and snowy parts of the country, and prides itself on its consistency. It doesn’t perhaps have the best gas mileage of its peers, but it has more room and cargo space than competitors such as the Ford Escape or Honda CR-V. This year they added standard Bluetooth® and a rearview camera, and available voice-activated GPS and power liftgate.
9 — GMC Sierra, retained value over five years: 48%
Getting its first facelift since 2006, the Sierra has a new engine with a horsepower increase to 305 hp, but not much improvement in gas mileage. What will help resale later are new features such as Chevy MyLink audio with color infotainment screen, OnStar®, SiriusXM® satellite radio, and in-vehicle WiFi. These improvements should keep the value up even as the Sierra ages.
8 — Chevrolet Camaro, retained value over five years: 49%
This year’s Camaro is almost 400 pounds lighter, with a wider wheelbase and a choice of 24 colors. It also now has a massive 6.2 liter V-8 packing 455 horsepower. The features that will keep future customers looking include a 7-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay, available MyLink navigation, phone charging pad, and in-car WiFi. It has voice-activated controls and smartphone-controlled locks and starter. This will only add to the desirability of the Camaro in the future, particularly with all that power to back it up.
7 — Subaru WRX, retained value over five years: 50.8%
The WRX isn’t the Subaru you buy to carry the kids to school, but rather the one you own when the kids aren’t around and you need a performance fix. Go for the bigger 2.5 liter engine, add a couple of paddle shifters, and head to the track.
6 — Toyota Tundra, retained value over five years: 53.8%
Since receiving its last makeover in 2014, the Tundra continues to have a loyal following for its choice of engines, and impressive payload and towing capability. The 2016 Tundra now has a standard backup camera, Entune audio system with touchscreen controls, and Bluetooth® hands-free connectivity. Its toughness and reliability will keep it viable over the next few years.
5 — Jeep Wrangler, retained value over five years: 54.9%
The Jeep Wrangler isn't known for its looks or gas mileage, but the Jeep name still brings in used vehicle buyers. It also doesn’t hurt that it has realistic ground clearance and four-wheel drive to be a true off-road vehicle.
4 — Chevrolet Colorado, retained value over five years: 58.3%
Originally designed from an Isuzu - GM partnership, the Colorado was filling its niche against smaller trucks like the Ford Ranger. With the Ranger now gone, GM has redesigned the Colorado to be more efficient and attractive to smaller-size truck buyers.
3 — GMC Canyon, retained value over five years: 58.6%
The Canyon is the equivalent to the Colorado by Chevrolet, and there are few differences. The Canyon is offering a 4G hotspot, but the two trucks will have equivalent retained value in the future.
2 — Toyota 4Runner, retained value over five years: 60.3%
The SUV market has slowly eroded as customers move more to crossover-style vehicles, but the 4Runner has evolved for those owners who want more cargo room. A new sliding cargo floor with a 400 pound capacity makes the 4Runner useful as a tailgate vehicle, without the need to lug a table around. Once again, Toyota ranks high due to its vehicle reliability history.
1 — Toyota Tacoma, retained value over five years: 61.7%
The Tacoma continues to win the retained value award because it is durable. It appeals to buyers who don't want a full-size pickup but want a lot of the capability to haul stuff and go off-road on occasion. The Tacoma has received a makeover to add some muscle to its looks, with a more angular body design. It now features a GoPro mount on the windshield, dual-zone climate control, the Entune audio system, Bluetooth® connectivity, and a backup camera. It’s rugged and it will hold up over the years.
